What we see

So much of what we see — or think we see —
Is conditioned by experience and expectations,
Which means our observations and opinions
Are always colored by the filters
Through which we view the world.
And so where I might see a continent
Torn apart by dissension,
You might see a fish, or a horse, running free,
Or something else altogether.
Which is why I paint without intention
And allow the painting to shape itself
On the chance it might have different messages
For different viewers.
