The ache beneath the pleasure

A chance encounter with friends,

 A beautiful evening, a glorious sunset, 

And a flock of geese circling through the sky: 

All the makings of a fabulous summer evening— 

And yet, beneath the surface, haunting images 

Of the fiery devastation of a beloved town. 

We treasure these precious moments 

And ache for the losses elsewhere in the world.
