Afternoon of a fawn

Something about the innocence of a fawn
Is irresistible:
The patience with which they watch
For their mother’s return makes us ache
For that time in our own lives,
Before the pain and betrayals
Made us lose our trust in goodness.
It’s a bit like watching a wedding:
So much love and hope on display,
Yet our tears fall at the thought
Of both the joy and the struggles
That lie ahead…
