A softening of heart

We may claim to be open,
And project an open stance,
But a closer look reveals a heart enclosed;
Guarded, protected, hardened;
Steeled against the possibility
That whatever truths we know
Might be flawed, and our imperfections
Exposed.
In contemplation/meditation we can learn
To soften those harsh barriers,
Acknowledge and accept those imperfections,
And in learning to love ourselves,
Relax our guard and connect more readily
With others.
