It takes so little --
a thin dark line or two --
to crystallize the canvas of a life:
some unexpected streak of death, or loss
can make a path, though different, suddenly more clear;
can bring new focus, new reflections,
purpose, definition, and conviction
to the textures and the layers
of the work that went before.
