The elephantine beauty of these tree trunks
Takes my breath away:
To have lived so long and endured so much,
Yet still be pouring energy
Into their annual display of autumnal color…
It gives me hope that we, too, can survive
These current depredations on our society
Without succumbing to destruction
Of our fundamental values, rights and freedoms.
