Beneath the skin

My mother always taught me
Not to judge a book by its cover,
But in case I didn’t remember,
The Madrona tree; the way it, like a snake,
Sheds its skin in the spring —
Would surely remind me
That whatever color the skin;
However apparently smooth
 The exterior might appear;
What’s underneath may very well surprise you.
