An imposition of ashes

Whether imposed by sudden holocaust
or lost to the slow burn of time,
much of what we knew now lies in ashes:
knowledge painstakingly gained now tossed aside --
or worse, irrelevant -- and still we carry on,
without the thoughts and lives of those we loved.
That darkened mark upon your forehead looms,
a stark reminder of the frailty of life.
